Understanding tags

In the QorePortal, you can tag entities, and use these tags to view, search, or filter records in the portal.

A tag is a simple text label associated with an object or entity in the portal. Understanding how tags appear in the portal can help you determine how to work with them.

Taggable entities

The following entities, described by category, accept tags:

  • Systems:You can add tags to Cores, protected machines, and repositories.
  • Organizations:You can add tags to commands associated with organizations in your portal.
  • Users:You can add tags to commands associated with users in your portal.

Note: Tags are available for commands initiated on the portal, and also for tasks and events displayed in the portal based on events or tasks that ran on a Rapid Recovery Core managed by your portal.

  • Following are some features of tags.
    • Tags are alphanumeric labels. While there are few limits enforced for tag names, consider the following information and best practices:
      • When creating tags, best practice is to avoid the use of any of the following special characters: " / [ : ] ; | = , + * < >
      • In list view, up to 3 characters of a tag name are visible. For tags restricted to 3 or fewer characters (for example, a tag named "Old"), all are visible: Old tag
      • In list view, for longer tags, only the first three characters display; the rest are truncated from this view. For a tag named "Michael," in list view you see: Michael tag
      • When viewing in the Update tags dialog box, between 7 and 25 characters are visible. For this reason, best practice is to limit tags to 11 characters.
    • You can apply any number of individual tags to a taggable entity. Tags appear in the order they are created.
    • In list view for any taggable entity, you can see up to three tags. If four or more tags exist, the first two tags are visible, and then you see a plus sign with the numeral indicating how many more tags exist for the selected item.

    Filtering records by tag

You can use tags as a binary filter constraint for Cores, machines, repositories, and commands. When Tags icon Tagged is added as a filter criterion, the records that appear on that page include only objects that have been assigned a tag. If you add other filters, then the set displayed includes only records that meet all criteria.

Filters appear only on pages using a list view. The pages in the portal that support tags include:

    • Under Organizations: Systems and Commands
    • Under Systems: Cores, Machines, Repositories
    • Under Users: Commands, Notifications

For more information on filtering the records listed on a page using tags (and other criteria), see Filtering records in the portal.

    Searching records by tag

You can include the content of any tag in a search; the resulting found set includes the tag value you included in your search criteria.

Note: When searching for tag names, you must use the full name of the tag. Unlike searching for systems, you cannot perform a search on a partial name.

Consider the example of an organization with three locations: Mumbai, New York, and Tokyo. You can create a tag for each geographic location. Once you tag your objects accordingly, you can then can filter Cores, protected machines, repositories, or commands by geographic location.
